The number, explained
What does "1 in 8 billion" mean?
1 in 8 billion means 0.0000000125%: the share one person is of the world population. It is not the probability of being born, and it is not the odds of any particular life.

What the number actually measures
The world population passed 8 billion in 2022 and is about 8.19 billion today. Divide one person by that total and you get 1 in 8 billion. It is a share of a population — the same arithmetic you would use for one seat in a stadium, or one drop in a reservoir.
Why it is not the chance of being born
If 1 in 8 billion were the chance of being born, every person on Earth would have had the same odds. They do not. Births are not spread evenly: about 17% of the world's babies are born in India, 7% in China, and 5.7% in Nigeria. A baby born in India is roughly 1 in 6 of the world's births; a baby born in a small island country can be 1 in tens of thousands.
This is the mistake most pages make. The phrase is a scale, not a probability. The probability comes from births, and it is wildly unequal.
So what are the real odds?
By annual births, the largest shares are India (about 1 in 6), China (about 1 in 14), Nigeria (about 1 in 17), Pakistan (about 1 in 19) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (about 1 in 29). Every one of the 172 countries has a page with its exact share and the numbers behind it.

What the game does with it
1 in 8 Billion takes the phrase as its theme and the birth data as its mechanism. A country is drawn by its share of annual births, then one life runs from age 0 to its end using that country's life expectancy, mortality, income and schooling. You do not choose the country. That is the point.
